Water, the Environment, and the Development of African River Basins: CODESRIA and the OMVS Join Forces

Presse Release

Number of visits: 1356

The Organization for the Development of the Senegal River Basin (OMVS), and the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) have decided to join efforts and collaborate in the search for solutions to the problems of development of African river basins. These efforts will include the organization of joint activities that will link research to policy and development interventions. The Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations was signed in Dakar, Senegal, on November 15, 2012 by the High Commissioner of OMVS, Professor M.Salem Merzoug, and the Executive Secretary of CODESRIA, Dr. Ebrima Sall.

The Memorandum provides for the development of, and participation in joint research projects and to bring research to development practitioners. The two institutions will seek to promote activities that will enhance and enrich research institutions responsible for issues related to water management, environmental protection, land and agriculture in river basins. This will contribute towards sub-regional integration not only at the inter-state level, but also at the community level by helping communities and leading economic actors to move forward.

The collaboration between CODESRIA and OMVS will also lead to the wide dissemination of knowledge produced by African research on the environment, and on strategic resources such as water and land. The two organizations will also disseminate the results of research on the various means used by local communities to strengthen their capacity for intervention and dialogue with governments, NGOs and other key actors in the development of the river basins of the continent. The two organizations will also share experiences and best practices in corporate governance while making efforts to accommodate members of their staff in their respective programmes. They will work together in order to create more efficient internal operations, and improve relations with their economic, cultural and social environments.

Based on their respective mandates and commitments, and to the extent of their ability, each organization will contribute to the mobilization of intellectual and human resources, as well as the provision of infrastructure and technical equipment for the goals they have set together. They will also work together to strengthen the collaboration between universities and research institutions, and river basin development organizations across the African continent.

The two organizations are based in Dakar, Senegal. The Organization for the Development of the Senegal River Basin (OMVS) is sub-regional, inter-state organization responsible for the management of the water resources and development of the Senegal River Basin.

CODESRIA is an independent pan African social science research council established by representatives of social science research centers and faculties of African universities that has, since 1973, been engaged in developing research in the social sciences and humanities. CODESRIA is recognized as a pioneer and the leading institution in the production of social knowledge in Africa.
